Join thousands of families, friends, and neighbors in this beloved Seattle tradition and travel the 2.8-mile path around the lake, taking in the warm glow of the luminaria. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own lights and candles to add to the ambiance.

Local musicians will perform at four sites around the lake:

• ·         The Green Lake Community Center on the east side
• ·         The Green Lake Small Craft Center (the Aqua Theater) on the south side
• ·         The Bathhouse Theater (Seattle Public Theatre) on the north side
• ·         The Arch on the east of side of the community center/pool.

Warm drinks and treats will be available at those locations, as will donation bins for nonperishable food items for Northwest Harvest.

Volunteers are needed to help place and light the thousands of luminaria, and to clean up after the event. Individuals, businesses, community organizations and school and scout groups are welcome to participate. Setup takes place from 2:30 – 5 p.m., and the lighting of the candles takes place at 5 p.m. Cleanup is from 8 – 9 p.m.

26th Annual Green Lake Elementary Christmas Tree Sale!

Green Lake Elementary School PTA’s Annual Christmas Tree Sale starts again this year on the first Friday after Thanksgiving (11/25) and continues until December 18.

The lot (located at 2400 N. 65^th St.) is generally open Mon. – Fri. from 4 pm – 8 pm, Saturdays and opening day from 9 am – 8 pm, and Sundays from 10 am – 7 pm.

All proceeds support education programs at Green Lake Elementary School.

Green Lake Elementary School PTA is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, Tax ID #91-1442923.

Lower Woodland Park

Seattle Parks and Recreation, the Green Lake community and sportsfield users are celebrating the renovated Lower Woodland Park fields #2 & #7 on Saturday, December 5, 2009 from 9 – 11 a.m. The event will include a special soccer clinic and games hosted by current Major League Soccer players and professional trainers, and a ribbon cutting ceremony. The fields’ inauguration is co-sponsored by Seattle Youth Soccer Association and Woodland Soccer Club.

The fields now have new green synthetic turf with markings for lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee and soccer. As one of Mayor Nickels Seattle Jobs Forward projects, these two fields were planned, designed and constructed in less than one year.

“The local sports communities, and especially our youth soccer association, have been working hard for many years to get these fields renovated and into great playing condition,” said Ed D’Alessandro, Executive Director of Seattle Youth Soccer Association. “We are happy with the quick construction time and excited to have them back in play.”
The Seattle voters approved the Parks and Green Spaces Levy in November 2008 and this Levy provided the funding for the renovation. The original Olmsted design included playfields that have been a vital part of Woodland Park throughout its history.

Strolling through the Phinney Ridge and Greenwood garage sales today, we were struck by the sense of community and people-helping-people for the neighborhood. From the flea market at the Neighborhood Center, to the multitude of homes teaming to sell their excess “stuff” – often for a charity – it was a great day for Phinney Ridge and Greenwood. After an awesome brunch at Pete’s Eggsnest, here’s a few photos from the day.
